Effective Strategies

The items listed below are strategies that librarians have submitted this
school year that they found were effective in promoting Pioneer Library
  at their institution.

  • Distributed information about Pioneer to every class.
  • Gave to each class stickers to put on or near the computer so they could
    remember the web site.
  • Showed each teacher how to use it.
  • Requested the PTA put an article in their newsletter on how to use it
including the new passwords for this year.
  • Presented information about Pioneer during 10th grade orientation of the library/media center.
  • Presented on Pioneer to all classes when they came into the library for orientation.
  • Mailed letters home.
  • Training students on how to use Pioneer Library.
  • Ask students to start every project in WorldBook so they can read a
    background article on their topic.
  • Invited UEN trainer to present to faculty.
  • Distributed information including home access instructions on
    Pioneer Library to all faculty.
  • Explained the use of a database with reliable information, versus the web.
  • Explained pioneer to all the classes and their teachers.
  • Handing out the parent letters at SEP Conferences so that parents are informed.
  • Showing all the resources that are available.
  • Encouraging the teachers to have the students use Pioneer in the computer lab.
  • Creating worksheets for 5th and 6th grade students and have them complete the questions using Culturegrams for States and Countries.
  • Using ideas from the Welcome to Culturegrams Online Edition workbook.
  • Introducing all students in grades 4-6 to Pioneer during their class time in the media center.
  • Having Pioneer set as the browser home page on all media center computers.
  • Teaching students how easy it is to use Pioneer compared to Google or other online search engines.
  • Collaborating with the computer teacher so follow up and additional research time is available for students during computer class.
  • Providing students with a copy of the Pioneer's home page so students can mark websites visited during demonstration and can have the home access information to take home.
  • Small highlights of Pioneer in library class and faculty inservice lessons.
