Effective Strategies
The items listed below are strategies that librarians have submitted this school year that they found were effective in promoting Pioneer Library at their institution.
- Distributed information about Pioneer to every class.
- Gave to each class stickers to put on or near the computer so they
could
remember the web site.
- Showed each teacher how to use it.
- Requested the PTA put an article in their newsletter on how to use it
including the new passwords for this year.
- Presented information about Pioneer during 10th grade orientation of the library/media center.
- Presented on Pioneer to all classes when they came into the library for orientation.
- Training students on how to use Pioneer Library.
- Ask students to start every project in WorldBook so they can read a
background article on their topic.
- Invited UEN trainer to present to faculty.
- Distributed information including home access instructions on
Pioneer Library to all faculty.
- Explained the use of a database with reliable information, versus the web.
- Explained pioneer to all the classes and their teachers.
- Handing out the parent letters at SEP Conferences so that parents are informed.
- Showing all the resources that are available.
- Encouraging the teachers to have the students use Pioneer in the computer lab.
- Creating worksheets for 5th and 6th grade students and have them complete
the questions using Culturegrams for States and Countries.
- Using ideas from the Welcome to Culturegrams Online Edition workbook.
- Introducing all students in grades 4-6 to Pioneer during their class time in the media center.
- Having Pioneer set as the browser home page on all media center computers.
- Teaching students how easy it is to use Pioneer compared to Google or other online search engines.
- Collaborating with the computer teacher so follow up and additional research time is available for students during computer class.
- Providing students with a copy of the Pioneer's home page so students can mark websites visited during demonstration and can have the home access information to take home.
- Small highlights of Pioneer in library class and faculty inservice lessons.
